Jake Jigga Juke: The Story Of A Song

For years, subscribers to my newsletter have gotten the opportunity to download my track Jake Jigga Juke.

The song, which does not appear on any of my albums, has been the source of a lot of questions over years.  Where did it come from? What is the song about?

My best recollection is that we recorded this song in 2005.  It was a fun time period in my band.  I had two really young guys, Robb Hideck, and Joel "Butch" Bignell.  We traveled around the state of Florida and occasionally took road trips out of state to play.  Our adventures were if nothing else, hilarious.

Last I checked with Butch, he was an artist, which is a suitable profession for him, considering th cool tour posters he used to make for us.  You should check out his work, but fair warning, its NOT SAFE FOR WORK:

Robb and I still talk on Facebook from time to time. Despite the fact that he used to be a drummer, he's now a responsible engineer with a wife and kids.  NO MORE ROCK & ROLL. (he designs roads though - I mean, how hard can that be?)

The band, circa 2005

In our day, we smoked the stage. I still remember us playing the Greater Ozarks Blues Fest in Springfield, MO. We were on the 'pub crawl" in the downtown district. We started playing to an empty floor, with a household lamp for our only stage lighting (no...I'm not kidding). We didn't care.We just ripped into the set and did our thing. Within 20 minutes the house was packed to the walls. They ended up having the fire marshall at the front door, controlling the number of people coming into the venue. It was epic...pics are below.

If I could I'd organize some reunion shows for us, but I think at this point in time it wouldn't be feasible

BAMF, except I don't think Butch was even old enough to legally drink alcohol.

Back to the Song...

Jake Jigga Juke is about moonshine, and more specifically Jamaican Ginger..its loosely about a video I once saw about a guy who got "jake leg" from some bad moonshine. (read about jake leg here.)  Despite the fact that bad liquor had caused his disability, he was such  an alcoholic, he was dancing in the video while sipping on a fresh batch.

We recorded the song in my house.  For a bunch of yahoos with some crappy software, it turned out really good.  Over the years I got into the habit of giving the song away at shows to get people interested in my music.  That later carried over onto the internet.
